As we reflect on 2020, a year filled with unprecedented challenges, we want to express our gratitude to our LAN members who have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Thank you for your service and unwavering commitment during these uncertain times. We also want to recognize the LAN’s accomplishments in reaching a new milestone with the celebration of its 5th anniversary and the launch of the Healthcare Resiliency Framework. We are proud of this work and appreciate your contributions, and we look forward to continuing our important work with you in 2021.
Over the past five years, the LAN has accomplished many significant milestones. These milestones include the APM Framework, which established a common vocabulary and a pathway for measuring successful payment models, and the APM Roadmap, a collection of key insights, promising practices, and the most current strategies for designing and implementing successful Alternative Payment Models (APMs). Our past achievements support the goal of improving patient experiences with quality outcomes and promoting shared accountability. The LAN is committed to accelerating the movement to value-based payment models, particularly those not tied to fee-for-service payments, that encourage rapid innovation and incentivize population-based care approaches.
Early in the pandemic, we recognized the need for our health care system to be resilient and sustainable. We tapped into the diverse membership of our Executive Forums to identify fundamental principles essential to payment models, such as the inclusion of health equity, that promote resiliency in our health care system. The result was the LAN’s newest milestone: the Healthcare Resiliency Framework. While this work was challenging during the pandemic, we achieved broad support for the resiliency framework with the signing of 41 shared commitments and 29 individual commitments from various health care organizations. These organizations committed to pursuing some or all of the reforms outlined in the Healthcare Resiliency Framework, but we know this is not nearly enough. The LAN is a public-private partnership that depends on your involvement for its strength and impact. We want to include your name or your organization’s name on that list in 2021!
Now is a time of unprecedented opportunity to create rapid progress in our value-based care goals and to align and collaborate for further improvement. The LAN can drive more action and implementation of effective APMs to lead to the outcomes that we seek to achieve. We are preparing our next steps and will be communicating them in the coming weeks and months, and we welcome your feedback and insight on this journey. Please visit our website or e-mail us. Share the Healthcare Resiliency Framework in your networks and encourage them to follow us on our social media channels (Twitter and LinkedIn) as well as to sign up for our list. We are all in this together, and we look forward to working with all of you in the coming year.
Best wishes for a happy new year,
The LAN Executive Forum Co-Chairs
Mark McClellan, Marc Harrison, Emily Brower, and William Shrank
